Range and Target Activities

Welcome to the home of the MCC Range and Target Activity Program – a component of the Mecklenburg County Council, Boy Scouts of America. The Council Headquarters are in Charlotte, NC with facilities at the Mecklenburg Scout Reservation (Camp Grimes) in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Belk Scout Camp in Midland, NC. We offer a complete package of opportunities to every range of Scout, from Cub Scout up through Venture Crew. Our facilities are open year round for Scouting groups as well as non-Scouting groups.

There are a few videos promoting Camp Grimes that include reference to various
range and target activities. These videos are hosted on the Council’s Facebook page.

2.18.25 Updates from MCC Range and Target Activities

Camp Grimes will add the new Pistol Shooting Program authorized by Scouting America in 2024

The Camp Grimes Program staff have decided to offer the new Pistol Shooting program as part of Summer Camp 2025. The program will essentially be the NRA FIRST Steps program for pistol. This first year we will be using brand new Ruger single-action revolvers. We intend to introduce other pistols and calibers in the future.

10.11.24 Updates from Scouting America

ScoutingU Releases Required Range Activity SAFEty Online Training for Unit Leaders

In collaboration with the National Range & Target Activities Subcommittee, ScoutingU has launched the new “Range Activity SAFEty” online training, which is now also accessible on mobile devices. The primary goal of Scouting America’s range and target activities is first and foremost centered around teaching safety. This new Range Activity SAFEty online training equips adult leaders with the knowledge to help support SAFE range and target activities at the unit level for Scouts BSA troops, Venturing crews, and Sea Scout ships. It’s important to note that Cub Scout packs are not permitted to lead unit-level range and target activities. This training is not required for district or council led range and target activities. This training is also not a replacement for certified instructors who must be present to operate the ranges. To access the updated training, log onto my.Scouting.org and search the catalog in the BSA Learn Center for “Range Activity SAFEty.” For additional information regarding Scouting’s Range and Target Activities, please refer to the Guide to Safe Scouting and the National Range and Target Activities Manual.

The short answer is no. Here is more information from the camp policy.

Cowboy Action Shooting is available at Camp Grimes

In case you haven’t already heard, we have built a Cowboy Action Shooting range at Camp Grimes. This new range was introduced in 2016. The Range and Target Activities Committee is continuing to work with the Camp Grimes program staff to make this range available during camp. Outside of summer camp, the Cowboy Action Shooting range can only be opened at district or council events.

Volunteer? Who, me?

Hi, there! We are so glad you are here.

Let me ask you a question. Did you go to summer camp as a youth? Do you have a favorite memory from camp? I attended summer camp. In fact, I attended both Camp Grimes and Camp Steere (the camp before Belk Scout Camp). My most vivid memories are my first time camping alone, my first time jumping in the lake for a swim test, and of course, my first time shooting a BB gun.

Now, in order for me to have made those memories, it took more than just a wooded lot, a lake and a few BB guns. It took a handful of paid Scouters and a lot of volunteers. The paid Scouters ensure we have the facilities, but it’s the volunteers that really make the memories.

Volunteering is super easy. You don’t need all kinds of training and credentials to be a big help. In fact, you don’t need to know anything about BB guns or bows and arrows at all! You just need to be willing to give a little of your time and we’ll teach you what you need to know.

During the training, we will teach you about archery, let you practice shooting and talk about the way to teach Cub Scouts. We also teach you about BB guns, let you practice shooting and go over the range commands. We have documented procedures (for reference) and will give you a quick reference card. It takes less than a day and you get to have fun on two different ranges.

Ok, now that you know a little more about how you can help make memories, visit our Training page to sign up for the Cub Scout Range Master course that fits your schedule. We generally offer three courses in the Spring and one in the Fall, but if you don’t find one that works for you, register anyway and choose the “Interested, but none of these dates work for me” option.
